In a move that surprised many, on May 5th 2025 Sun Poker shut down their poker site to all players. Sun Poker has claimed that they are now focusing more attention on their casino operations and their flagship brand Omni Casino. If you had funds on Sun Poker they have now been transferred to Omni Casino in full where players can withdrawal or play.
Why Shutdown Sun Poker?
Here is the official statement as provided by Sunpoker:
We pride ourselves on offering the best services and due to changes made on the iPoker network in May 2025, we could no longer provide our valued members the poker experience they have come to know and enjoy at SunPoker. We thank you for over 10 years of "fun in the sun."
For those players who aren’t familiar with the recent changes made at iPoker, they were pretty dramatic for the smaller rooms. Essentially, iPoker decided that instead of pooling all players together (like all poker networks do) they would create two classifications of poker rooms and two different pools. Essentially grouping together the players from the large poker rooms and small rooms separately. Smaller poker rooms generally benefit from being on a large network to provide liquidity and games for their players as they aren’t large enough on their own to be attractive. It’s an interesting strategy from iPoker and it’s already resulted in a casualty with SunPoker shutting down.
The Full Tilt Factor. Interestingly, sunpoker shutdown the day before FullTilt opened their doors. This is probably no coincidence as they most likely felt that their small player base would get smaller as players would flock to Full Tilt once they opened on the 6th of May.
